Aikido Uniforms

First of all, it is entirely possible to do Aikido without the "proper Aikido uniform" when you first start doing Aikido. In fact, most Aikido teachers will ask you to observe and maybe also participate in a class before you even join; just to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into.

After you have joined, your teacher will then probably provide you with the Aikido uniform you will need. If for some reason your teacher tells you to buy a uniform on your own or if you'd like to get another Aikido uniform as a spare, then you will need to know what to look for.

The Basics Of An Aikido Uniform

The uniform you will need for Aikido is called a "gi" or "dogi." Usually, you can buy the entire Aikido uniform as a set, which consists of three parts: a white top, which is like a jacket, a white pair of pants, and a white belt.

If you have been shopping around for a dogi at a martial arts shop or on the Internet, then you may have seen uniforms specifically made for Aikido. It's not really necessary to buy an "Aikido Uniform." A Judo uniform will work just as well, if you can't find one specifically made for Aikido. Truth be told, a Judo uniform will probably last you much longer, because they are usually made of heavier material and better construction.

The only down side to using a Judo uniform over an Aikido uniform is that some types of Judo uniforms are not pure white. They are more of a tan color, because they have not been bleached. The only reason this could be a problem is that people might think you are new to Aikido, because your dogi is still tan. Don't worry about that, because they will know you are new anyway by the color of your belt. Besides, the more you use your new dogi and wash it, the color will fade and you will have a white Aikido uniform pretty quickly.

Here are some basic points to remember...

Top - Aikido is a year round activity so, if you're really serious about your Aikido, then you will probably want two tops or jackets: one light one for summer (single weave) and one heavy one (double weave) for winter. You should write your name on the bottom left side of the jacket from top to bottom with a black magic marker. You can also have it sewn in as well.

Bottom - The trousers or pants should have a patch of thicker material around the knees. In Aikido, you spend quite a bit of time on your knees doing suwari waza or sitting techniques. A double stitch along the seems is also recommended.

Belts - Aikido for adults only has three types of colored belts; white for 0 to 6 kyu, brown for 7-9 kyu, and black for dans. When you buy a new uniform it will usually come with a white belt. As you progress up the ranks, your teacher should provide you with the proper colored belt.

If you are a white belt, then you will need to write your name on your belt as well. Brown and black belts usually have their names sewn into the belt. Your teacher will probably have this done for you too.

Hakama - The Hakama looks like a skirt or dress. Don't be fooled; people wearing a Hakama are generally high ranking. The idea behind the Hakama is to hide the movements of the feet from your opponent.

Depending on the style of Aikido you do will determine whether you can wear the Hakama or not. Women usually can wear a Hakama earlier than the men. It's best to check first before you buy one.

There are a few variations to the color of the Hakama: a dark navy blue to black are the norm, but there are also white Hakamas. It is best to check which color Hakama you will need before you buy one.

What To Look For When Buying An Aikido Uniform?

The really important thing to look for when buying an Aikido uniform; is the size and how it fits and feels. If it is too small, it will constrict your movements. If it's too big, it will get in your way. The more time you spend training, the more time you will spend in the uniform, so make sure it fits you well.

The next thing you should consider when buying an Aikido Uniform is strength. You are going to be stretching, jumping, sliding, and getting pushed and pulled a lot. So get a uniform that is going to last. As mentioned earlier, the two things you should look for are double stitching along the seams of the trousers and make sure the knee pads have an extra thicker piece of material.

The last thing you will want to consider before buying a new Aikido Uniform is the price. The double stitching and extra padding will probably cost you a little extra, but it's worth it, because you won't have to keep buying new uniforms.

Conclusion

When first getting started you may not need a uniform or dogi right away, but if you decide to stick to it, then you will eventually want to buy an Aikido uniform. Just remember that Aikido is not a sport. It is a true martial art, so even if you don't have a uniform at first, take your Aikido practices seriously. How you wear the Aikido uniform is also very important, so don't be afraid to ask someone in the locker room how to put it on properly.

Quality is also important. For a little more money, you can get a good quality uniform that will last you for quite a long time. And finally, make sure it fits.
